The modem just started working again - out of the blue. I had tried restarting the computer and it did no good, but after the computer had been shut down for a while, the problem resolved itself.
I started up the computer this morning just to triple check before the computer guy came over, and dialed. It didn't connect, but I did get a dial tone, which is more than I had before. So I tried to connect again - and made it! So here I am. :)
