Payday (with 20 hours overtime)!

I'm soooo hungry today. Bleh. Today was laundry day and payday so I was busy. I had 20 hours of overtime on this paycheck and rent does not have to come out of it so I am stocking up on stuff and paying bills, including my huge cost for the BodyBugg.

BodyBugg armbandSpeaking of which, the BodyBugg is still way overestimating what I burn so I think I will have to return it. I talked to the manager at the club and he persuaded me to give it another chance, but it still isn't working right. :(

Evo cat foodToday I walked down to the laundromat and back. Then I walked up to the pet food store for cat food and back. Total cost of pet food and treats (including two discounts) - $89. Yike. But my cats are worth it. They need the healthiest food and I believe Innova Evo is that.

I walked down to BART and took that to my stop, then hopped the bus out to WalMart. I picked up my prescriptions and bought a set of three cooking pans. The ones I have are scratched up and no longer nonstick. I opted for a slightly pricier brand hoping they would be better quality than the WalMart brand. I'm planning on having scrambled eggs tomorrow morning and my current pans won't cut it.

I also bought two bottles of liquid iron from Lupe, the woman who administrates the health care at work, along with another box of multi-vitamins packets and more Vitamin D. My cost - $55.

I got the Snuggies box sent back today. I included a nastygram inside demanding a complete refund and that they pay for my shipping cost. I included a copy of my shipping receipt. On the phone yesterday I was told I could get a complete refund, but they would not cover the $16 shipping to mail the box back to them.

The Snuggies I did order have already been mailed and should arrive soon.

Tomorrow's plans - walk up to the grocery store for food. After Brad gets off we will drive to Costco and pick up my two prescriptions there, including the expensive Repliva. I also need to buy salad, Diet Rock Star, and check to see if they have cottage cheese. Their Web site says they do, but Brad hasn't seen it before. Friday night I need to portion the salad and pick out the red cabbage (cabbage is not good for thyroid patients).

Saturday is church and a little splurging on drinks and dinner out somewhere.

Week 94, Day 4

Calories eaten yesterday: 1206
Fat: 23g (18%)
Carbs: 102g (34%)
Protein: 142g (48%)
Weight this morning: 133 (One week ago: 132.6)
Calories burned in exercise today: 348

I just can't cut back on my weight training. I love it too much and because I'm usually only making it to the gym twice a week anymore. So today was one hour of weight training and 30 minutes of interval work on the treadmill, alternating between walking and running. I finally figured out how to use the interval training setting! Gotta do more of that. :)

Tomorrow is laundry day and payday. Friday I will pick up my medications from WalMart and Costco including the expensive prescription Repliva iron pills. I'm also looking forward to getting the 25mcg pills of Levothyroxine and be able to take 112mcg every night instead of the 100/125mcg every-other-day thing I've been doing for the past week.

I don't think I mentioned that I didn't feel the doctor gave me enough refills on my Celexa since I have to take 1 1/2 pills a day. So what I've been doing the last week is alternating between 1 pill a day and 1 1/2 (40mg and 60mg) for an average of 50mg per day. I'll see how I do on this slightly lower dose. Eventually I'd like to get back down to 40mg, but we will see. I need to get my thyroid stuff straightened out first since the meds make me edgy. Eventually I hope to adjust.

Walk For Life West Coast 2009

Calories eaten yesterday: 1203

Protein: 156g (54%)
Weight this morning: 132.8 (One week ago: 134.8)
Calories burned in exercise today: 175

I will get to the Walk For Life today, but first, more about BodyBugg and the Snuggies scam.

Use the BodyBugg to track my calories for my walk to BART and then from BART to work. It said I burned about 350 calories. FitDay, on the other hand says the same exercise burns about 175 calories. Somehow I think FitDay is right. BodyBugg seems to be doubling the number I should be getting.

I called Snuggie today about sending my order back. They said they will NOT reimburse me the huge shipping cost and only give me a fraction of my money back. We will see how the dispute with the bank and the BBB that I filed turns out, if at all. But I am livid. The girl at Snuggie told me that they reason they could find my first order was because they had my first and last name reversed. I also noticed the shipping label on the box and my last name was not spelled right either even though I clearly spelled it out on the automatic answering device.

---

Ok, a little on the Walk For Life. The Walk For Life Web site says 30,000 people showed up. Other estimates ranged to below 10,000 for both rallies. Last year there were 25,000 walkers and 250 protesters. I couldn't find a number on how many protesters were there this year. The route was 2.5 miles and wound it's way down the Embarcadero past the piers including the famous Pier 39, eventually ending at Marina Green.

It wasn't nearly as cold this year. The threat of rain and overcast weather kept the temperature much warmer - a thermal underwear shirt and sweatshirt was all I needed. No need for a jacket like last year.

The video of some of the protesters are here. I have two videos of the rally and they are here and here. A link to all the Walk For Life videos on YouTube is here.

The Flickr photo set is here. Keep checking back because I have about 50 photos total and only have 19 up so far.

We arrived about 10:30 am and could here the counter-rally starting as we walked to our rally. I guess the protesters walk the same route we take to the corner that they set up on every year. Our rally started at 11 with several speakers and the walk started at 12. Like last year we saw scattered protesters along the way to the street corner where most of them were. Police (who were facing them) kept us separated. There seemed to be a lot fewer protesters this year. It seemed to take forever to arrive at the Marina Green.

When Brad and I finally arrived I needed to sit down and eat the snacks we'd packed (peanuts and granola bars). Brad needed to use the bathroom. It was a long line and in the end I decided to wait until we started walking back and stopped at McDonald's for a snack. I got a McChicken sandwich without mayo. Brad got a full meal and I shared his fries.

That was all we could afford with both of us being broke right now. We made it back to the BART station and went home.

BodyBugg, and the Snuggies SCAM!

Calories eaten yesterday: 1164
Fat: 22g (17%)
Carbs: 88g (31%)
Protein: 148g (52%)
Weight this morning: 135.4 (One week ago: 136.8)
Calories burned in exercise today: 245

I don't know when I'll get to the Walk For Life stuff; the BodyBugg saga continues. I talked to the manager at 24 Hour Fitness today and he says I should wear it a bit more. It didn't misbehave when he looked at it and showed a rather modest calorie count (1300 for the last day worn). I think it is making up numbers because it most certainly did not show 1300 that last time I looked at it! Using the "trip" feature for my 30 minute walk to work it said I burned 200 calories! I don't think so. FitDay tells me 88 calories and I think that is much more accurate.

At any rate, I have to call tech support, get a return number from them, take that back to 24 Hour Fitness and jump through a bunch of hoops, then wait for a check. The return process is crazy.

I will give the BodyBugg a couple of days of wear and then (most likely) call tech support. I want it to work - I really do. It just doesn't seem to.

I called GoWear Fit but they assured me that all I had to do was send the device back and they will process it. I included the return slip in the package along with my reason for returning it and asking for a refund. They assured me that my credit card would be credited in time. So that is out of my hands.

I don't know if you have seen those commercials on TV for Snuggies. Well, they are a scam. A fraud. Plain and simple. The phone ordering was completely automated. I ordered two blue blankets. I wanted one extra thick and one regular, but they didn't give that option. There was no total quoted at the end.

After going through three phone numbers I finally got ahold of a live person. They say orders can take time to process so I ended up calling several times. Each time I was told that my order was not in the system. I eventually ended up ordering again figuring that my first order didn't go through for whatever reason.

Two days after I placed my new order, four Snuggies arrived in the mail, all super thick. I checked my bank account and I had been charged $99! WTH?!? I have not been able to contact the company since then. Hopefully tomorrow I can contact them. I filed a complaint with my bank saying these were unauthorized charges. I need to send these blankets back since they were not what I wanted.

The box contained no packing slip and there was no return address. The company is clearly making it as hard as possible to return merchandise. I found the company name through a Google search. I have already filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. When I checked out the company's rating it was an F!

At any rate, this company is running a SCAM! Do not fall for it!

The stress of the whole GoWear Fit/BodyBugg saga got to me and I ate off plan. :(

I'm surprised I didn't gain with my little cheat last Thursday, so I guess breaking even is pretty much the best I could hope for.

The BodyBugg is not working well. It gives me an extreme overestimate of what I'm actually burning. I hoped it would pick up on my low metabolism and give me a number that would be closer to the truth. The number it gives me is so inflated that I know it is false.

I decided to return it to my gym. I tried to do that today but they won't take it back without the manager there and told me to come back later. :-p

I'll have to get to the Walk For Life stuff later. It was a very busy weekend so I'll talk about my doctor's appointment on Friday first, and the Walk For Life on Saturday another day. I'm working on getting the videos up. I have a ton of still photos that will take longer.

Ok, Friday's doctor appointment. I told the doctor I felt a little better. At first I thought it was the iron, but since it's still low it must be the thyroid meds. (Come to think of it, it could also be the Vitamin D.)

He agreed that the weird dosing before my last test made the blood tests worthless. I asked for an increase. I wanted to ask for 125mcg but wasn't sure the doc would go for it so I played it safe and asked for 112mcg. He agreed and gave me a 'script for 25mcg tablets that I will cut in half.

I gave the doctor more stuff about TSH that I have found on About.com's thyroid forum and he thanked me for it.

In the meantime I am alternating 100 and 125mcg every other day (by splitting some leftover 50mcg pills in half) to get a 112 average. I won't be able to pay for the 25mcg pills until the next payday.

I asked about my iron. I said I was doing everything I could with the Cream of Wheat and how the carbs in that are messing with me, I'm taking my iron pills, and starting liquid iron. I asked if there wasn't a way to get the levels up more quickly.

I showed him the Repliva ad I saw on this forum and he said he has prescribed it before and agreed to try it. The med costs $95 for 3 months so I have to wait until payday to get it. He wants to run a complete iron panel after two months on the medication.

I asked about getting my female hormones tested due to my periods stopping when I was only 35. He ordered the two I mentioned plus some.

My next blood test panel is going to be super expensive - TSH, Free T3, Free T4, ferritin, transferrin saturation, TIBC, estrogen, something that looks like "testosterone," and two other female hormone tests I can't recall. The girl who admins the health stuff at work is going to have a fit! And my 20% is going to be...YIKE.

So basically, a complete thyroid panel, complete iron panel, and complete female hormone panel. Eek.

I told him I didn't need the female hormone test that day and would just do all of them at the same time in April and get it all over with in one blood draw.

Toward the end of the appointment he palpated my neck but said he didn't feel anything.

So...whew. That's where it stands. My friend submitted all the new 'scripts to WalMart (thyroid and depression meds) and Costco (Xanax and Repliva). I'll get them next Friday after I'm paid.

GoWear Fit a dud, bought BodyBugg

Calories eaten yesterday: 1220
Fat: 19g (14%)
Carbs: 116g (39%)
Protein: 138g (46%)
Weight this morning: 132.8 (One week ago: 131.2)
Calories burned in exercise today: 29

bad dayThe GoWear Fit is a dud. I plugged it in last night. It's supposed to take 3 hours to charge; it took 4. I put it on and within 6 hours it gave me a low battery warning. (The battery is supposed to last 5-7 days!)

I called the company and they said to send it back and they would replace it. I told them I would rather have a refund. I mailed it back today without return authorization since customer service had already closed for the day. I don't work Fridays and didn't want to wait until Monday. I didn't have enough money for the postage so I borrowed some from Brad. It's being sent back the same way it got here - UPS ground. They should have it by Thursday.

I was supposed to do laundry today, but with the GoWear Fit not working and my gym having a special on the BodyBugg, I decided to get that. So I went to my gym instead of the laundromat. At first when I walked in I didn't see the display up and was worried they might not have the special anymore. But I asked at the front desk and they did so I bought it. :)

It comes out to about the same cost as the GoWear Fit. The armband is roughly $250, vs. $160 for the GoWear Fit (with a 12 month commitment). The BodyBugg comes with 6 months included. The watch/monitor is the same as the GoWear Fit - about $100. The special at the gym was that if you buy the BodyBugg armband you get the monitor for free. All together, with tax, it came to $270.79. The GoWear Fit was $282.64 with tax. SO not a huge difference.

The best I can tell the main difference is that the BodyBugg does not have reminders and does not measure sleep efficiency. I can also only log my weight once a week; GoWear Fit allows daily logging if so desired.

I will admit, the stress of today's drama got to me. I needed comfort food and craved a cheeseburger from the burger joint downstairs. I borrowed some money from someone else (Brad was already gone) and got it. But at least I asked for it with no mayo, put my own no calorie ketchup on it, and I didn't get fries or a shake, just the burger. That has to count for something.

So...I'll be back Sunday with a report of whether or not the BodyBugg works the way it's supposed to! Grrr.

Tomorrow I have an A.M. doctor's appointment and I will do my laundry after that. Saturday won't be any more restful due to the Walk For Life. I am looking forward to it and it is certainly good to do something like this on the Sabbath, but it is not restful. :-p I'll give a report of the walk Sunday or Monday.

My GoWear Fit came today! The armband box doesn't say anything about Mac compatibility, only PCs. I tried to call the company, but customer service was closed for the day. I'll try it out tonight when I get home. I have the Mac software downloaded so hopefully that's all I need.

The armband needs to be plugged in to my home computer to even charge so there's nothing I can do until I get home tonight. It then take three hours to charge. The watch/monitor can't be calibrated until the armband stuff is done, so everything is put away for now. If everything works the way it should I could be wearing the armband and monitor it as early as tomorrow.

I'll give a full update tomorrow. :)

Mom gave me some birthday money that arrived yesterday. I asked Brad to go to Costco tomorrow and get me Alli, salad, cat litter, and if there is enough money, more Airborne.

The annual Walk For Life is this Saturday. I'm excited. Brad and I went last year for the first time and it was so much fun that we are going back this year. I just hope it doesn't rain! Rain is forecast right now. :( Here's the Flickr photos I took at last year's event. This year I hope to do more video.

My GoWear Fit finally made it to California! It's in San Pablo right now so I will have it within a day or two. :) I read through the online manuals yesterday. It seem that it can only be charged via the USB cord while plugged into the computer. So once I get it I won't be able to use it until I get it home and plug it in, then give it three hours to fully charge. I though it would be more like my iPod that can be charged via a regular wall plug.

I have gained weight over the past few months and I am hoping this device will help me to make better choices and help me to know how many calories I should eat per day.

I am soooo sore from my workout yesterday. After being away from the gym for so long my muscles aren't used to that kind of work. It hurts to walk and my thighs and butt ache. If I sit still for a while (like at my desk) I get stiff. Bleh. Tomorrow I hope to go back to the gym and do upper body.

The only exercise today was walking to BART, and then from my stop to work.

January is Thyroid Awareness Month. Take this opportunity to learn more about Thyroid Disease.

My belly is huge. That little binge on Saturday really did me in. I have gained real fat and it concentrated around my middle. I can't wait for my GoWear Fit to get here so I can see if that helps. I'm going in the wrong direction and gaining weight! :(

Today I went to the gym and did 45 minutes of mostly lower body work, then I just walked on the treadmill for 45 minutes because I was tired. I walked to work from the train station of course.

140 even this morning. It was because I was a total piggie on Saturday so I deserve to gain 4.4 pounds. :(

I spent Friday cooking and cleaning, then shopping with Brad and more cooking. I now have a ton of chicken breast in my house that still needs to be portioned.

Saturday I ate horribly. The carb demon got me good. Breakfast consisted of eating out and having two petite vanilla scones, a chocolate croissant, a grande skinny latte and a chocolate banana Vivanno, a small hash browns at Burger King, and a glazed donut and two mini donuts at Krispy Kreme. Then at church I ate four granola bars at the break and then ate the potluck lunch! That wasn't everything, but I think I hit the highlights. :-p

After church we had our bi-annual business meeting and I was there with my laptop to take the minutes. Pastor Steve accidentally found out that the church website (bayareasdb.org) doesn't work. I confirmed on my computer today that that address does not work. I went to the actual address that bayareasdb is cloaked from and that URL does work. So now I am charged with getting to the bottom on why it's not working since Becky has been paying the bills.

After this 3 hour long meeting Brad and I went out to New Zealander for drinks, but first we went for a walk in the area since I needed some exercise. When we went back tot eh car for my camera we discovered my blue bag was missing. When we left Pastor Steve's house Brad thought I had it and I thought he had it. Grrrr. He paid for our drinks since he felt guilty over leaving the bag even though I said he didn't have to and certainly didn't ask him to. He felt so bad he hardly sipped his beer.

We stopped at 7-11 for some snacks (I wasn't hungry then but new I would be later), and I am ashamed to say I bought cupcakes and peanut M&Ms. Brad then dropped me off at my apartment because I had stuff to do and he drove back to Pastor Steve's, showing up later with my bag.

This morning he drove me to the gym (the downtown one) because he had to leave to talking to his ex-wife and son. The High St. gym is great and is also closer to my apartment, but there is no public transportation anywhere close. I left my gym bag at home so Brad went back to get it and I did some light walking on the treadmill while he was gone. Some gym felt faint and I watched the fire crew come and take him away in an ambulance.

I did 45 minutes of upper body work. I have really lost strength and stamina from all the overtime - I have only been to the gym one time in over two weeks! For cardio I did the stairmaster at levels 4-5 and then walked at 4.0 mph for 15 minutes.

And oh...after buying the GoWear Fit last week, I found a sale at my gym today on the newest Mac compatible BodyBugg - buy the Bugg and you get the watch monitor free. Grrr. That would have been cheaper. :-p

GoWear Fit (similar to Bodybugg)

Calories eaten yesterday: 1104

Carbs: 106g (39%)
Protein: 121g (45%)
Weight this morning: 131.2 (One week ago: 131.6)
Calories burned in exercise today: 277

I bought the GoWear Fit "Lifestyle and Calorie Management System." It similar to the more well known BodyBugg. The selling point for me was that the GoWear Fit is Mac compatible; Bodybugg didn't used to be, but I just found out they finally made it Mac compatible. The GoWear Fit is cheaper anyway, and they offer free shipping through the end of this month.

Both systems are supposed to tell you how many calories you burn per day. I suspect my metabolism is very low due to the thyroid disease, but I can only guess at how low. Hopefully this will correct that.

I signed up for the 12 month plan - $259 upfront (for the armband, watch, and Website access), $7 a month after that, and one free month. Bodybugg is $350 upfront, but includes a 6 month subscription. Their cheapest monthly plan (12 month commitment) works out to $8.33 per month. With taxes and everything I paid $282.64 for the GoWear Fit including tax and everything.

I put it on my credit card, and paid off the current balance with my overtime. Hopefully I can pay off a good chunk of the new balance with the overtime in my next check.

I'll let you all know how I like it when it arrives!

Today's exercise was walking to the laundromat and back, then to BART, then from my stop to work, stopping at Pac N Save - an hour 36 minutes. Whew!

Tomorrow I need to get a few more groceries and cook the chicken I bought today. It's on sale this week so I'll buy more.

My birthday caused huge weight gain. :( And I never even had cake and the donuts and peanut M&Ms I wanted!

Slept in today and finally caught up on some much-needed sleep. Tomorrow is laundry, Friday is groceries and cat food and Saturday in our bi-annual church business meeting. I'm the clerk so I have to be there with my laptop.

I decided that with all the overtime I've been working to stop at WalMart and go purse shopping. I found a cute bright pink denim purse for $10 and bought that. I'll post a picture on Flickr in the near future.

I feel like I'm fighting something - like I'm on the edge of getting sick. I don't feel sick, but I don't feel well either.

Today was mail day so I went into the City. My 10 million step charm was there waiting for me along with a special pink large shoe key fob. The property check came so I deposited it and bought some magnesium at GNC.

Tomorrow I hope to sleep in. I have to catch up on sleep. I didn't get enough rest over the weekend and I just feel plain run down.

Missing the gym for over a week took it's toll. My pecs are still sore from Sunday's workout and I've lost strength and stamina. I couldn't get my running pace above 5.7 mph and couldn't maintain that for long. :(

The cats are at it again. Xena's newest behavior is to chase Abby - and not in a friendly way. I wish I could do the move over and make it easier for Xena to adjust. Her replacement for the window she no longer has is the fish tank. She's staked out the counter area in front of the tank as hers, which is fine. Abby took over the cat tree and I only wish I'd brought both trees with me because Xena doesn't use "Abby's" tree.

I was off-plan Sunday for my birthday (binge!) so no food stats. The weight above is my Sunday weight. I obviously didn't weigh myself today.

Quite a birthday present for myself to hit my goal weight! :) I know I'll be up next week because of my birthday binge, but the holidays are now officially over so I can focus on my diet without a holiday or party interfering. :)

Since I was working so much overtime last week I had to do my laundry on Friday, then went to my chiropractic appointment, then did some grocery shopping with Brad. Brad and I were both pretty wiped out from the week and after we had both has dinner and watched some TV we went to bed early.

After church Saturday we didn't stay for the potluck and just went home. In the evening we had burritos at the little authentic Mexican place (Geraldo's), and then drinks at Applebee's. They gave me a free drink because I had said that my birthday was the next day. They also didn't charge us for the hot fudge shooter and when we mentioned it they said it was free, too.

Sunday was my birthday. I'm 38 now. We were late getting up and had to rush to McDonald's so I could have my McGriddle. Then we went to Starbucks for coffee and I used my free birthday drink voucher that I received because I'm a gold card member. Brad also bought me three petite chocolate croissants. Brad wanted breakfast and this Starbucks doesn't sell the sandwiches so we went to the McDonald's by the gym and he got chicken strips and fries. I had a couple of cookies.

Then we worked out at the High St. club. I did about 50 minutes of weight training, 30 minutes running on the treadmill, and 15 minutes on the ArcTrainer (something my usual gym doesn't have. Then we went back to Starbucks for a chocolate banana Vivanno (with nonfat milk and light syrup) - perfect after a workout.

We went home and changed, then went to Burger King for a paper crown (the kind for kids) which I wore the rest of the day. I bought onion rings there. Then we went to Costco for pizza, and Safeway for sugary food (cupcakes, Suzy-Q's). They didn't have the kind of cake slices I wanted so I passed at that time (I never did get any cake). We were going to go to Krispie Kreme but on the way I suddenly felt very tired and just wanted to go home. I did ask to stop for ice cream, though, as I wanted my scoop of Rocky Road. :)

At home we relaxed and watched some TV. I pay-per-viewed Kung Fu Panda. When I was over we went to Jack In the Box for dinner. I got my favorite meal - a sourdough burger with curly fries and a chocolate shake. I then asked for Starbucks and got a berry stella as my dessert. :)

Back at home we split a mini bottle of champagne (I had most) and I also had some wine. Brad had to be up early and I was tired so then we went to bed.

Today I am working overtime so no exercise except for the walk to BART and then from my stop to work.

A Look Back at 2008: Moving & Medication

On January 19 Brad and I participated in the Walk For Life (short video), a pro-life event held in San Francisco every year. The walk itself was only 2.5 miles, but moved slowly. This was it's fourth year and the first time for Brad and I. I had a great time (though it was very cold, and want to go back next year.

On April 29 I received the standard letter from the owners that they would be raising my rent starting June 1. It was going up to $780. I decided to move. I put in my 30 days notice in May and started shopping around. Most places wanted people right away so I had to give up until June.

May 18th was the annual Bay To Breakers race. I bested last years best time by about 4 1/2 minutes and came in at 1:19:54. I again ran the whole race except for the hill.

I looked at three more apartments in early June, but ended up moving into one I had looked at back on May 4th! It is a little more expensive at $725 per month plus water, and is very small. But it was completely refurbished and quite cozy. Brad and I were able to move most stuff over ahead of time, so the actual move was mostly just furniture and went very quickly. Brad and I each took two days off work to move, unpack, and run numerous errands. I officially moved on June 30th when we took the furniture and bed over.

June 10th I had most of a complete physical at my newest doctor out in Castro Valley. They did complete bloodwork, urine and fecal testing, an EKG, and a chest x-ray.

July 11 Brad and I saw Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D, my first 3 D movie since I was a kid. :) The movie itself was only okay, but the 3D made it worth it.

When the bloodwork results from my physical came back I noticed that my TSH was toward the high end and my Free T4 was barely in range on the low end. These are thyroid markers so at my next appointment on July 25 I asked for further testing - Free T3, ferritin, Vitamins B-12 and D, and thyroid antibodies.

I also asked for a 5 hour glucose tolerance test at this appointment. I went in for that test on August 1 (video), and when I got the results back I found out I was hypoglycemic and my blood sugar went as low at 30 at one point. No wonder I felt like crap during the test!

My DSL kit arrived August 1 and I got hooked up to high speed Internet. Zoom zoom! No more having to bring my computer to work to upload videos. :)

At my next doctor's appointment on August 8 we went over the further tests that were ordered - my Free T3 was in the basement, my ferritin on the low end, great Vitamin B levels, slightly low Vitamin D (though not worrisome), and no thyroid antibodies. I was officially diagnosed as hypothyroid and put on 50mcg levothyroxine (T4 hormone), as well as an iron supplement to get my ferritin up.

I wasn't able to go to General Conference in early August due to skyrocketing costs - I simply didn't have the money - so I tried to take just one day off and have a little fun locally by playing tourist for a day in San Francisco. Unfortunately, my fill-in at work flaked on me and since I hadn't totally covered my butt, her screw up was blamed on me and I was told to come in.

I finally got my much needed vacation on September 25, coincidentally enough the day that the fill-in girl had originally written down incorrectly. I also took the last half of the 24th off so I could get everything ready and be well-rested so I could better enjoy my day off.

On September 2 I took the deposit money from my old apartment and signed up for a 3 year pre-paid membership at my gym, so no more monthly dues for me!

I had another doctor appointment on September 19. The doctor bumped me up to 75mcg of levothyroxine. I asked him for adrenal tests to rule that in or out and he sent me for them. According to the people at About.com's thyroid forum my results were good so I am going to drop that line of inquiry.

My TSH came down a bit, my Free T4 went up a teeny bit, but my Free T3 took a 130 point jump and was finally in normal range for the first time in God only knows how long! :) My ferritin went down. I had given blood September 5 and thought the intervening time (three weeks) would be enough to get my levels back up, but it wasn't. I started eating Cream of Wheat every day, at first one serving and then two. Cream of Wheat has 50% of the RDA of iron in every serving.

Since the levothyroxine made me edgy and I would cry easily the doc bumped me up to 60mg of my anti-depressant (Celexa). I started the higher dose that very day, but didn't begin the 75mcg of thyroid meds until September 27, the day after my blood tests. I wanted to see how 50mcg effected my numbers before going up to 75.

After a while I tried to go down on the Celexa dose back to 40mg, and while it wasn't as bad as it had been, I still got weepy and edgy so I went back up to 60mg.

75mcg of thyroid meds made me very hungry. I am always hungry anyway from my Celexa, but this was much worse! Thankfully it seemed to calm down after several weeks and slowly return to my "normal" level of hunger.

October 31 the doctor bumped me up to 100mcg of thyroid meds. I also gave blood at the Red Cross (video). When I gave blood September 5 my hemoglobin level was 12.5% - the minimum required to be able to donate. On October 31 my level was 13.8%, so I guess the Cream of Wheat is helping. Of course, after the donation it will be much lower! I'm not going to give blood as often now. My low ferritin is the reason for my tiredness and I take two steps back in my treatment every time I give blood.

My next doctor appointment is the end of January and I will get blood tests done a couple weeks before.

It has been a hard year financially. When the economy went to pot, food prices soared. I'm now paying nearly double for some items I use every day (like salad), and can't afford anything better than iceberg lettuce. Before I could occasionally buy something healthier if it was on sale. Now I can't even afford the sale price.

So it's been a rough year just trying to survive from paycheck to paycheck, and if I didn't have the $200 a month from my Dad and the $200 a month from the Oregon property I wouldn't be able to make it.

Book review - Breath of Rapture

Breath of Rapture by Polly McBee Hutchison was a disappointing book. I read the old 1977 version; the newer one boasts on the back cover that if you liked the Left Behind series then you will like this book. I found it frankly dated (the gas rationing of the 70s) and hopelessly unbelievable. Why they re-released it I can't imagine. About the only good thing I can say is that it's a fast read.

I wanted more detail, the way the Left Behind books went into detail and drew you into the characters' lives. I just couldn't care about these characters. It was too short to go into much detail and is only from the main character's point of view, which is of course limited. It's written in a journal style - a personal diary the character keeps.

Since when is the Antichrist going to have the last name of "Frank"? I thought the Antichrist was going to come from the Middle East. And why does Mr. Frank first appear on an American college campus? That makes no sense. He would be more concerned with international politics, not some nameless American campus.

The gas crisis is mentioned repeatedly as a sign of the end times. The book was written in the 1970s, but the gas crisis dates the book and we all know how that ended - we got through it and the world hasn't ended yet.

Without going into too much detail the author makes her personal beliefs known, and one of them is that God desires all Christians to be healed. And she never tries to deal with how Paul had a thorn in the flesh that God refused to remove (2 Corinthians 12:7-9).

I can't mention more unbelievable things without giving away the plot, but there are a few and the last few chapters were the worst. Save your money and your time on a more believable fiction book.

Last day of overtime

There will be no post from me on Sunday because it's my birthday and I'm taking the day off. I will post my Sunday weigh-in on Monday.

My weight is up again today even though I have been eating less than 1200 calories all week. *sigh* My metabolism still sucks. I am forever doomed to stay at my current weight no matter how little I eat.

Today's exercise was the same as the rest of the week - walk to BART, then from my stop to work. It's all I can manage with these 12 hour workdays.

Tomorrow I have to somehow squeeze in a decent night's sleep, laundry, and some basic grocery shopping, along with my chiropractic appointment at 4 pm. To get there I have to leave the house about 2:45 so I have no idea how I will squeeze in the laundry. I likely won't get to bed until 4:30 or 5 a.m. tomorrow so to get laundry done will mean little sleep. Bleh. But I do need the money. The cats are down to their last bag of dry food and the healthy food I feed them is expensive.

I have a couple posts cued up to post this weekend - a book review and a review of the highlights of 2008. Other than that I will see you back Monday with my Sunday weigh-in and how my b-day went. See ya' soon!

Thyroid test results and yet more overtime

Calories eaten yesterday: 1123
Fat: 19g (15%)
Carbs: 112g (41%)
Protein: 121g (44%)
Weight this morning: 130.4 (One week ago: 133.2)
Calories burned in exercise today: 181

thyroid medicationGot my test results back today and I am confused. As many of you know, I had some weirdness with my meds due to the lab being closed. I am on 100mcg of Levothyroxine. I went off my meds two days before the test (the test didn't happen). Then I was back on for two days at 150mcg, then off the morning of the test (to prevent any spikes).

Other than this week I have been feeling better (I feel icky this week because of the overtime and lack of sleep). Anyway, overall I have been feeling much more energetic.

TSH: 0.14 (0.4-4.5)
Free T3: 242 (230-420)
Free T4: 0.9 (0.8-1.8)

I don't feel overmedicated and the Frees are of course low. Now what do I do? I think I'm going to ask for retesting and a follow-up appointment much sooner than I hoped. And pray he keeps me on 100mcg because I feel tons better.

How could my TSH be so low and is this why I am feeling better? How would the weird dosing effect my numbers? TSH, Free T3, and Free T4 all went down.

Ferritin: 25 (10-154) Previous test: 13

I have been eating two servings of Cream of Wheat every day. I think I am going to ask him about that prescription iron pill I heard about. I haven't given blood since my last test and have been eating the cereal and taking my pill each day. How can it still be so low??? I thought I felt better because my ferritin was higher but it's not. :(

Got the word today that L. will be out the rest of the week. Brad and I will be working 12 hour shifts to cover for her. That means that out of five work days, four will be 12 hour shifts. That also means doing laundry on Friday since I'll need to sleep in Thursday morning (tomorrow).

I don't know how I'll work everything out yet, but I certainly need all the overtime I can get. I hope L. gets better soon because Sunday is my birthday and I am taking it off. I ain't working no 12 hour shift that day! No way no how!

Exercise today was the same as yesterday - walking to BART, and then walking from my stop to work. I get really hungry on these long shifts so I stopped at WalMart today and bought a bunch of drinks - Cherry Diet Rite (new flavor!), two triple size Diet Rock Stars, a 6-pack of Perrier, and one Diet 7-Up.

I'm falling farther and farther behind in getting my photos uploaded and am still back on January 2 in my 365 project. I've taken the photos but have no time to do basic editing and then the uploading and titling. It's easy work, but it just takes time.

[Edit: I got a response from someone on the thyroid board which reads in part:

Why would TSH be down? It's probably because you took 150 mcg T4 for 2 days prior to testing. TSH responds to the amount of thyroid hormones available at the time of testing, so the higher dose pushed your TSH down. Your FT4 and FT3 are probably lower because you skipped a few days of meds.]

More overtime & iron

Calories burned in exercise today: 167

Another overtime day. I was woken up by a text message from Brad asking if I could work until 3 a.m. It will mean no gym sessions this week, but I need the money so I said yes.

I slept in today because I was tired from my last 3 hour shift followed by having to get up earlier than I wanted for the blood test. I'll have to sleep in again tomorrow since bed will be very late tonight.

Lupe bought the liquid iron for me yesterday (Floradix brand). My employer pays half the cost, which is good because this stuff is very expensive! I've done some Googling and it seems that the ferrous gluconate iron in the liquid is just as good and more readily absorbed than the ferrous sulfate pills the doctor told me to take. The box says it doesn't constipate. Yippee!

Overtime and blood tests

Calories eaten yesterday: 1192

I had to work until 3 a.m. last night - well, actually 2:30 as that is when Brad came in. But no one bothered to tell L. that she didn't have to come in. So she walks in a little before 11 pm, holding a blanket and sicker than a dog. I thought Brad had told her not to worry and that it would get covered one way or another but nope. Anyway, I sent her home and I had to stay.

I was in bed by about 3:30 and slept until my alarm went off at 10:30. I was out the door by about 11 and took the bus to the lab for my blood tests. It was almost an hour wait before I was called in. I took the bus to work from there and arrived about 1:30. I asked Brad if he wanted me to clock in early and at first he said no, but then he decided okay. So he left at about 2 pm. L. is not coming in tonight but Y. and S. are each covering 4 hours each.

So the blood tests are finally done and I can get back to regular life and start feeling good again. I was off my thyroid med for three days, then on for two days at one and a half times my normal dose, then off last night. I don't know how that will effect my tests. I also ate two servings of Cream of Wheat yesterday and don't know how that will effect my ferritin test, if at all. I'll restart the thyroid meds tonight at one and a half times my dose, then go back to my regular dosage after that.

No exercise today. I didn't know how long the wait at the lab would be so I took the bus all the way instead of walking the distance to the BART station. I got in just 10 minutes of walking from getting off the bus early and walking the rest of the way into work. I was thinking of doing more walking outside, but it is bitterly cold today.

Tomorrow I plan to sleep in. I am beat today and know I won't be up to going to the gym tomorrow.

Well, I gained over the holidays and now we see the full result - I am well over 140 when I always used to be under. The holidays aren't over for me yet as my birthday is one week away. But I will stay on plan for this week and hope to really be able to get down to losing weight after my birthday is over.

Friday went horrible. I called Quest and their answering machine said nothing about being closed. The sign on their door said nothing about being closed on January 2, just that they were closed for New Years.

But there they were - totally closed. Then I went to Safeway and they didn't have anything I needed. Food was going out due to the New Years holiday, but the truckers weren't moving so no food was coming in. They had nothing I needed. And all this craziness done in the rain!

I later checked the Safeway by my house and they were also picked clean. Brad and I tried another Safeway near my chiropractor and they had some stuff, but not nearly everything. I finally had to settle for the two cup containers of cottage cheese because the four cup ones were gone. At least the two cuppers were on sale so they didn't cost any extra. :)

So I don't know when I can get my blood test done and as of this writing I don't know when I am getting off tonight. L. is sick and so far no one can fill in which means I will be stuck working until 3 a.m. (12 hours) and then Brad will come in and work 12 and I would come back at 3 pm. I'll post tomorrow what actually happens.

Not being able to get the blood tests meant going back on my meds and iron and eating Cream of Wheat. The last two nights I've taken an extra half dose of my thyroid meds after being off them for three days. With the fluctuation in the meds and iron I am feeling tired and not so great. I can't wait until the blood tests are over and I can get back to normal meds and food.

I was totally wiped out Friday. I chalk it up to three straight days of not enough sleep. Brad and I went to bed about 9 p.m. after I had some wine to relax. I felt a little better on Saturday, but am tired once again today.

Last night we went to see Bolt in 3D. It was an okay movie. We had drinks and an appetizer at Applebee's beforehand. Then we had popcorn at the movie and I had a granola bar I took from church. After the movie we had dinner and more drinks at Applebee's. Brad had nothing alcoholic though. They couldn't get my Mochatini right. The bartender doesn't make them often and didn't check any cheat sheet. She forgot the cream and then put too much in. :-p

I pigged out on 100 Calorie Packs when I got home, but the good news is that they are all gone and I am not buying anymore. I'm skipping my high-GI carbs after my workouts for now, but even if I did include it I would use the cheddar cheese rice cakes I have. I've got to break this sugar addiction. I had four 100 calorie packs, 2 1/2 cups of cottage cheese, and toast with Walden Farms jam. And I had been so good at Applebee's having a Weight Watchers dinner and a dessert shooter.

I decided not to go to the gym today and to walk with Brad. We did the paved Lafayette trail because the rains are keeping the trails we want to do all muddy. We walked for about 2 hours and 20 minutes. :)

New Year's Eve and New Year's Day

No nutrition stats today since I was off plan for New Year's Eve. But I am back on now!

Weight January 1 of last year: 145.6
Weight January 1 this year: 141.4

Calories burned in exercise today: 245

I ate bad on New Year's Eve day - granola bars, candy, cookies, and fast food. Two servings of oatmeal before I went to bed.

I'm a little hung over today but not too bad. I feel fat and bloated and my jeans are tight. Time to get back to a strict low-calorie diet. My goal is about 1200 calories a day, whether or not I work out.

I walked up to the bus only to find that the bus is only running once an hour since today is a holiday. I had forgotten to take my vitamins so I walked back home and took them and then walked back to the bus. At any rate, I got to the gym late so I got out late.

I went to the gym and did 45 minutes of weight training, 30 minutes on the elliptical, and 15 on the stationary bike. I decided not to take BART since I figured I missed the 2 o'clock train so I took the bus into work. I was nearly a half hour late. I should have taken the train. It would have been close, but I would have been on time at least. Oh well. I'm going to use my 4 hours comp time from Christmas Eve to make up for leaving two hours early last night, so it will cover the half hour.
